With the emergence of findings suggesting that the structure was the world’s first university during recent excavation efforts, it has gained even more significance. Since 2006, the excavation works conducted by the Mardin Museum Directorate in the vicinity of Mor Yakup Church have yielded information about various phases of the structure. However, assessments regarding the nature of the structure are still debated within the academic environment. This study aimed to thoroughly investigate the functional changes and periods that St. Jacob’s Church underwent throughout history and to provide a detailed description and restitution for each period. In this study, we utilized excavation reports, data from written sources related to the settlement and structure, information obtained from the structure itself, traces existing on the structure, and data derived from architectural necessities (logic/scenario). The results indicate that this structure served three different functions (baptistry, church, university) and went through two main periods (pre-Christianity and postChristianity)
<keywords/></article-meta></front><body/><back><ref-list><ref id="B1" content-type="article"><label>1</label><element-citation publication-type="journal"><p>Akyüz G,1998, Nusaybin’deki Mor Yakup Kilisesi ve Nusaybin Okulu [Mor Yakup Church and Nusaybin School in Nusaybin], Mardin K?rklar Kilisesi, Mardin.</p><pub-id pub-id-type="doi"/></element-citation></ref><ref id="B2" content-type="article"><label>2</label><element-citation publication-type="journal"><p>Bell GL, Mundell Mango M, 1989, The Churches and Monasteries of the ?ur ‘Abdin, Pindar Press, London.</p><pub-id pub-id-type="doi"/></element-citation></ref><ref id="B3" content-type="article"><label>3</label><element-citation publication-type="journal"><p>Fiey JM, 1977, Nisibe: metropole syriaque orientale et ses suffragants des origines à nos jours [Eastern Syriac Metropolis and ?ts Suffragans from the Origins to the Present Day], Secretariat du Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium, Louvain.</p><pub-id pub-id-type="doi"/></element-citation></ref><ref id="B4" content-type="article"><label>4</label><element-citation publication-type="journal"><p>Khatchatrian A, 1957, Le Baptistère de Nusaybin [The Baptistery of Nusaybin].
